After years behind the camera as a kid hoping to make it big someday, I’m at Drake University trying to make that happen studying Digital Media Production in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication as well as getting a concentration in Leadership. Drake was the first college I visited and I knew that this is where I wanted to be. Now I’m a sophomore and I know that I made the right choice. Drake has given me so many opportunities outside of the classroom that I wouldn’t have gotten at any of the other schools I looked at. As a freshman, I started working with Creative Services and ESPN3. I have had several internships so far with the Iowa Cubs, Iowa Energy, and Cocoa Creative.
I was a video intern with the Iowa Cubs for their 2016 and 2017 seasons. The internship was very helpful in teaching me most aspects of sports video production. Through Creative Services, I have seen how sports productions work while being broadcasted live on television. Some day I would like to use this experience to be a producer.
Des Moines has brought forward so many opportunities, but I still go home pretty regularly. I’m from a small town just south of Dubuque, IA. I grew up on a farm, so coming to Des Moines was a huge change. My family has owned the farm for over 150 years and has been awarded the Century Farm and Heritage Farm awards at the Iowa State Fair. My family has always been a great support. They have introduced me to some of my favorite activities, especially traveling. Ever since 6th grade we have gone on vacations regularly.
Since, traveling has been a huge part of my life. I have been to Spain, Bahamas, Costa Rica, Hawaii multiple times and a handful of states, but I have never been able to study abroad. I’m hoping to go soon. Over J-Term I was going to go to London, but decided to stay in Des Moines for an internship that was going to be more relevant to what I want to do later on after graduation.
